10. Arizona Recruit is transferring out of U of A to Kansas
- Jeff Withey, a 7-foot freshman who spent one semester at Arizona but did not play for the Wildcats, will transfer to Kansas next semester. Kansas coach Bill Self confirmed Withey’s decision Wednesday night via text message. Arizona’s top 2008 freshman, Withey requested a release from his scholarship before the season began after coach Lute Olson suddenly retired in October.
9. Sosa ready to make a comeback….again?
- “I still don’t have an offer, and I shouldn’t be looking for offers out there,” said Sosa, the National League MVP in 1998 and the only hitter to surpass 60 or more homers in a season on three occasions. “Any team who wants to sign me should have the initiative and make an offer.” Sosa added that he’s still in good physical shape in hopes of making a comeback to professional baseball.
8. Heat’s Wade spreads some holiday cheer by placing a displaced family in a new home.
- When Dwyane Wade heard the plight of a South Florida woman whose nephew accidentally burned down her home — and ruined all the family’s possessions — the Miami Heat star knew he had to do something. So he helped the family move into a new home, just in time for Christmas.
7. Jerry Jones comes out and says that Wade Phillips job is safe
· Wade Phillips will be back as coach of the Dallas Cowboys next season, and Jason Garrett will remain in charge of the offense, regardless of whether the team makes the playoffs, club owner Jerry Jones said Friday.
6. Superman to comeback and defend his Slam Dunk crown in Phoenix.
- Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard will try to defend his Slam Dunk championship at the NBA All-Star weekend in Phoenix in February. In New Orleans last season, Howard edged defending champion Gerald Green for the title in one of the most creative competitions in recent history. Howard scored perfect 50s on both of his first-round dunks — one of which included his donning a cape for a “Superman” dunk.
5. Bowl season continues as Notre Dame ends a bowl loosing streak and TCU shocks the Broncos.
· Joseph Turner scored on a 17-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to give the No. 11 Horned Frogs their first lead of the night, which they preserved for a 17-16 victory over No. 9 Boise State in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.
· Clausen set Notre Dame bowl records with 401 yards passing and five touchdowns to lead the efficient Fighting Irish to their first postseason victory in 15 years, 49-21 over Hawaii on Wednesday night.
4. Reports surface that the 49ers will sign Singletary to a contract to take over as the Head Coach in San Francisco.
· The Sacramento Bee is reporting that, according to a source close to the situation, the 49ers are planning to offer a multiyear contract to Singletary shortly after the team ends its season with Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins.
3. Coyotes suffering financially look to new investors to help the bottom line.
· The NHL hasn’t taken over control of the Phoenix Coyotes, but it is taking an active role in trying to find new investors or ownership for the financially strapped franchise and is being kept apprised of any “significant” financial decisions the team makes, ESPN.com has learned from team and league sources.
2. Christmas Basketball leads to high drama.
· Roger Mason didn’t play at all in the fourth quarter until there were 4.3 seconds left. Then he came in and made the biggest shot of the game. Mason’s 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer Thursday gave the San Antonio Spurs a 91-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns.
· Kobe Bryant had 27 points, nine rebounds and five assists, Pau Gasol scored seven of his 20 points in the final three minutes, and the Lakers used a strong finish to beat Boston 92-83 Thursday, snapping the Celtics’ franchise-record 19-game winning streak.
1. The Yankees continue their spending spree as they ink Mark Texiera.
· The New York Yankees swooped in Tuesday and hooked prized free agent Mark Teixeira, reaching agreement with the first baseman on an eight-year contract worth $180 million, three sources involved in the negotiations said. The agreement, which is subject to a physical, includes a signing bonus of about $5 million paid out over the first three years of the contract, no opt-out clause and a complete no-trade provision.
