It seems superfluous to say that Calgary is a tough place to play. But the Yotes went into the Saddledome and outplayed the Flames. Reinprecht, Morris, and Jovanovski all regestered their first goals of the season. If you listened to the first Top Shelf Report I stated that Mo and Jovo needed to step up offensivly, and tonight they proved that they could contribute.
Things did not look good early when a turnover in their zone resulted in an early Calgary goal by Daymond Langkow. It didn’t seem to stop the resiliant Yotes as Morris powered a screaming slap shot past Miikka Kiprusoff to mark the second shorthanded goal for the dogs in the last two games. A beautiful move by Doaner resulted in the Coyotes taking the lead. The Flames scored of another turnover on a rediculious tip shot past Ilya Bryzgalov. That is the last of the scoring that the Flames would see the rest of the night.
In the second period Jovo scored on a much needed goal from the blue line, you could see the relief on his face when his Power Play goal eeked past the Flames tender. A insurance goal from Steven Reinprcht off of a beautiful feed from Kevin Porter gave the Desert Dogs a good cushion going into the final period.
The third period was a defensive gem for the Yotes. As the Coyotes doused the Flames and powered their way back to .500.
This game was a step in the right direction for a Coyotes team that seems a lot better than their record shows.
Points of note include Bryz’s save percentage on the penalty kill. Bryz has a .90 percent save percentage on the PK making him one of the toughest goalies to score on the man advantage. The Coyotes also held the Flames scoreless on the powerplay, Calgary has the 5th ranked PP in the NHL. This also marks the second game in a row that the Yotes have scored a shorthanded goal.
Next up for the Coyotes is a big game in Vancouver against the Canucks.
