I truly believe that Texas got screwed by the BCS and the human polls!  The Longhorns beat the Sooners on October 11, 2008.  Right?  45-35! On a neutral field –the Cotton Bowl.

660Texas_Oklahoma_Football.sff.embedded.prod_affiliate.8.jpgLets break it down, looking at the games between OU, Texas and Texas Tech.  Texas Tech did beat Texas by six in the last few seconds in Lubbuck, and again, the Longhorns beat the Sooners 45-35.

Since the Longhorns beat Oklahoma on a neutral field, Texas did fall to Texas Tech.  Then the Red Raiders have struggled a bit.  They got killed by Oklahoma in Norman.  I would have liked to see how that game would have played out at a neutral site.  Reminder, Texas beat Oklahoma on a neutral site.  Texas Tech also barely got by Baylor – yes the Baylor Bears! So, with that said it leaves us with OU and Texas since they both played Tech.

I understand it’s tough to argue between them both, because both are so explosive.  Okay, the Sooners have been on an incredible onslaught of scoring 60-plus points in four consecutive ballgames.  Great!  I am happy for Sam Bradford, give him the Heisman Trophy now.  But I can not get past the fact that Texas beat Oklahoma:

Here is more of a breakdown: OU put up 61 on Oklahoma State, but also gave up 41.  Texas gave up just 24 to the Cowboys.  OU scored 66 on the Aggies, but their defense allowed Texas A&M to score 28 points.  The Longhorns gave up only nine and scored 49. Okay, lets move on to Kansas, the Sooners scored 45 and surrendered 31.  Longhorns scored 35 and gave up 7.  Does the reward go to the team that scores the most points?  Hummmm.  Doesn’t defense account for anything.  Texas has the best defense in the Big 12 (check the stats) and defense wins championships.  Did I mention that Texas beat Oklahoma?

Colt McCoyTexas played the toughest schedule of the three teams in the Big 12 South three way tie-breaker. The combined win-loss record of Longhorns’ opponents is better than that of Sooners and Red Raiders.

Texas had one of the toughest schedules in college football, I think Georgia might have been the overall toughest. They had to play four teams, all ranked within No. 11 or better with a combined record of 25-1, in a four week span. They beat No. 1 Oklahoma (5-0), No. 11 Missouri (5-1), No. 7 Oklahoma State (7-0), and lost to No. 6 Texas Tech (8-0) in Lubbock on a last second touchdown.

During the same four weeks Oklahoma did not have to play four ranked opponents. They lost to No. 5 Texas (5-0) and then beat No. 16 Kansas (5-1), unranked Kansas State (4-3), unranked Nebraska (5-3), and unranked Texas A&M (4-5). After a bye week, Oklahoma beat No. 2 Texas Tech (10-0) in Norman.

If head-to-head doesn’t matter then the regular season shouldn’t either.  Not only did Texas beat the team that will represent the Big 12 South at the Big 12 Championship game, but they beat the team that will represent the Big 12 North, too.  Please!.

Imagine OU going to the title game after Texas beat them by 10 on a neutral site.

Furthermore, can we please delete the USA Today Coaches Poll from determining the fate for the teams.  Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe has already said on Sunday that they will look at revamping the tie-breaker clause and consider using a stronger head to head system.

I am sure they will adopt what the top Division 1 conference does with tie-breakers:  If there is a three-way division tie in SEC, there are certain criteria in place to break the tie before it goes to the ratings similar to the Big 12.   However, if it does go to the ratings, the team that is third is removed from consideration and the winner of the head-to-head matchup (just in-Texas beat OU) between the two higher rated teams is chosen as the division champ.  The only exception is if there are more than five places that separate the top two teams in the ratings.

If the Big 12 had such a rule, since Oklahoma and Texas are one spot apart in the BCS (regardless of which was No. 2 and which was No. 3), Longhorns’ head-to-head win would break the tie.

I want to point out what could have happen: If OU wins the Big 12 and goes onto the title game and beats Alabama and Texas heads to the Fiesta Bowl and beats Ohio State or even USC, then we are looking at OU #1  and Texas #2 in the polls.  Who is really the number one team?  Texas beat OU.

I have ordered by Missouri Tiger gear and will be rooting on Missouri to beat Oklahoma, and then I will just laugh!  This is definitely the first time I am will be rooting so hard for a team I do not follow at all!  But due to the circumstances, I want the Sooner nation to go down.

One last thing to leave you with Sooner fans – Boise St, USC and LSU!  Bob Stoops is 1-4 in BCS Bowl games, while Mack Brown is 2-0.
